Most Popular Christmas Cookies by State: Interactive Map

It’s the holiday season, and to celebrate, we’re bringing together two of our favorite things: maps and Christmas cookies. We put together a visualization of the most popular Christmas cookie by state on an interactive map, using Google Trends data.

The most popular cookie in the United States? It may surprise you. A whopping seven states Googled Italian Christmas cookies more than any other type (Idaho, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Texas, and Vermont).

Other popular choices are peppermint (5), M&M (4), gingerbread (4), sugar (4), shortbread (3), and crinkle cookies (3). Is your favorite cookie on the list?

Check out our Christmas cookie map below. Using color-coding to distinguish between different cookie types, you can easy interact with this data to discover which cookie your state is whipping up for the cookie swap this year.

You can also use the legend to sort by your favorite cookie to see which states are in agreement with you.

Create Your Own Christmas Map Using ZeeMaps

On ZeeMaps, you can create your own holiday-themed map. You can easily recreate the map above, or design your own map using other Google Trends data following these simple steps.

  1. Create a New Map.
  2. In Additions, choose “Upload (Copy/Paste) Spreadsheet” and add your data to the map.
  3. Select “USA” as the starting position.
  4. Choose “States” as the upload type.
  5. To add photos into the card for each state, you can insert them into your spreadsheet before upload. Or, you can add media after upload by clicking into the marker, choosing the “Media” tab, and selecting the photo you’d like to upload.
  6. To add borders so the states are more clearly delineated, in “Settings,” under “Map Display” check “Draw border for regions uploaded, e.g., US Zip Codes, counties, etc.”

To make your map static instead of interactive, save it as a PNG or PDF. Simply use the Print or Share option, then click “PDF/PNG Image.” You can play around with the settings to get the image to look the way you want it to.
